Youth On Religion : The development, negotiation and impact of faith and non-faith identity

Description

Globalisation has led to increasing cultural and religious diversity in cities around the world. What are the implications for young people growing up in these settings? How do they develop their religious identities, and what roles do families, friends and peers, teachers, religious leaders and wider cultural influences play in the process? Furthermore, how do members of similar and different cultural and faith backgrounds get on together, and what can young people tell us about reducing conflict and promoting social solidarity amid diversity? Youth On Religion outlines the findings from a unique large-scale project investigating the meaning of religion to young people in three multi-faith locations. Drawing on survey data from over 10,000 young people with a range of faith positions, as well as a series of fascinating interviews, discussion groups and diary reports involving 160 adolescents, this book examines myriad aspects of their daily lives. It provides the most comprehensive account yet of the role of religion for young people growing up in contemporary, multicultural urban contexts. Youth On Religion is a rigorous and engaging account of developing religiosity in a changing society. It presents young people's own perspectives on their attitudes and experiences and how they negotiate their identities. The book will be an instructive and valuable resource for psychologists, sociologists, criminologists, educationalists and anthropologists, as well as youth workers, social workers and anyone working with young people today. It will also provide essential understanding for policy makers tackling issues of multiculturalism in advanced societies.

Despite years of study and advanced technologies, we still do not Evolution, Creationism, and the Battle to Control America's Classrooms download book fully understand how the "typical" brain works, much less how an autistic brain works. And while we have become increasingly familiar with the term autistic thinking, people with autism are still misunderstood, leading to frustration, depression and missed opportunities to reach one's potential. According to Peter Vermeulen, treatment of autism is still too focused on behaviour and minimally focused on observation or determining the way of thinking that leads to the behaviour. In this groundbreaking book, inspired by the ideas of Uta Frith, the internationally known psychologist and a pioneer in theory of mind as it relates to autism, Vermeulen explains in everyday terms how the autistic brain functions with a particular emphasis on the apparent lack of sensitivity to and awareness of the context in which things happen. Full of examples, often humorous, the book goes on to examine "context" as it relates to observation, social interactions, communication and knowledge. The book concludes with a major section on how to reduce context blindness in these various areas, vital for successful functioning.

Michael B. Berkman,Eric Plutzer: Evolution, Creationism, and the Battle to Control America's Classrooms

Evolution, Creationism, and the Battle to Control America's Classrooms

Description

Who should decide what children are taught in school? This question lies at the heart of the evolution-creation wars that have become a regular feature of the US political landscape. Ever since the 1925 Scopes 'monkey trial' many have argued that the people should decide by majority rule and through political institutions; others variously point to the federal courts, educational experts, or scientists as the ideal arbiter. Berkman and Plutzer illuminate who really controls the nation's classrooms. Based on their innovative survey of 926 high school biology teachers they show that the real power lies with individual educators who make critical decisions in their own classrooms. Broad teacher discretion sometimes leads to excellent instruction in evolution. But the authors also find evidence of strong creationist tendencies in America's public high schools. More generally, they find evidence of a systematic undermining of science and the scientific method in many classrooms.

The Reaction Path in Chemistry: Current Approaches and Perspectives download pdf

D. Heidrich: The Reaction Path in Chemistry: Current Approaches and Perspectives

The Reaction Path in Chemistry: Current Approaches and Perspectives

Description

The so-called reaction path (RP) with respect to the potential energy or the Gibbs energy ("free enthalpy") is one of the most fundamental concepts in chemistry. It significantly helps to display and visualize the results of the complex microscopic processes forming a chemical reaction. This concept is an implicit component of conventional transition state theory (TST). The model of the reaction path and the TST form a qualitative framework which provides chemists with a better understanding of chemical reactions and stirs their imagination. However, an exact calculation of the RP and its neighbourhood becomes important when the RP is used as a tool for a detailed exploring of reaction mechanisms and particularly when it is used as a basis for reaction rate theories above and beyond TST. The RP is a theoretical instrument that now forms the "theoretical heart" of "direct dynamics". It is particularly useful for the interpretation of reactions in common chemical systems. A suitable definition of the RP of potential energy surfaces is necessary to ensure that the reaction theories based on it will possess sufficiently high quality. Thus, we have to consider three important fields of research: - Analysis of potential energy surfaces and the definition and best calculation of the RPs or - at least - of a number of selected and chemically interesting points on it. - The further development of concrete vers ions of reaction theory beyond TST which are applicable for common chemical systems using the RP concept.

This book is a comprehensive guide to understanding Adrenal Fatigue Syndrome, its causes, signs and symptoms, and offers a range of proven remedies for recovery. Through the power of diet, nutrition and lifestyle, you will learn how to heal your own Adrenal Fatigue naturally, without the drugs, medications, stimulants or fad diets that are short-term, temporary "fixes" and often just make the condition worse. Go is a game that two people play with a Go board and Go stones. The players take turns putting black and white stones on the board to surround area, or territory. Whoever has more territory at the end of the game is the winner. No one can say really what Go is, how you should play it, what it ought to mean to you. That can only be a personal discovery, perhaps with the aid of a native guide pointing out the The Reaction Path in Chemistry: Current Approaches and Perspectives free pdf features of the terrain. Learn to play Go. It is simple, but it is not easy. It is worth the time you spend on it. This is to be expected of the best kind of game.

English Reformations: Religion, Politics and Society Under the Tudors pdf, epub, mobi

Student and Tutor in Modern History Christopher Haigh: English Reformations: Religion, Politics and Society Under the Tudors

English Reformations: Religion, Politics and Society Under the Tudors

Description

English Reformations takes a refreshing new approach to the study of the Reformation in England. Christopher Haigh's lively and readable study disproves any facile assumption that the triumph of Protestantism was inevitable, and goes beyond the surface of official political policy to explore the religious views and practices of ordinary English people. With the benefit of hindsight, other historians have traced the course of the Reformation as a series of events inescapably culminating in the creation of the English Protestant establishment. Dr Haigh sets out to recreate the sixteenth century as a time of excitement and insecurity, with each new policy or ruler causing the reversal of earlier religious changes. This is a scholarly and stimulating book, which challenges traditional ideas about the Reformation and offers a powerful and convincing alternative analysis.

After the #1 "New York Times" bestsellers "Split Second," "Hour Game," "Simple Genius," and "First Family," Sean King and Michelle Maxwell return in their most shocking case: a high stakes struggle where the relentless needs of national security run up against the absolute limits of the human mind. This collection changes things, giving us the words from officially released studio and live recordings, as well as selected variant lyrics and revisions to these, recent revisions and retrospective ones; and, from the archives, words that, English Reformations: Religion, Politics and Society Under the Tudors free download pdf till now, have not been published. "The Lyrics," edited with diligence by leading Dylan scholars, is the ultimate, definitive source for unpacking Dylan's enormous, varied, and rich lyrical catalog. As set down, as sung, and as sung again. Groupthink, constantly rotating ministers and a weak parliament all contribute to wasted billions and illogical policy. But, it doesn't have to be this way. Informed by years of research and interviews with senior cabinet ministers and civil servants, this razor-sharp diagnosis of flawed government is required reading for every UK citizen. With its spirited prescriptions for more fool-proof policymaking, it will prove to be one of the most important political books of the decade.

The Thin Blue Line: How Humanitarianism Went to War

Description

This is an acclaimed exploration of humanitarianism's emergence as a multibillion-dollar industry that has played a leading role in defining international crises, and shaping the foreign policy of Western governments and the United Nations. Drawing on his own experience as an aid worker in over a dozen conflict and post-conflict zones, Conor Foley shows how the growing influence of international law has been used to override the sovereignty of the poorest countries in the world.

"A powerful testament to how Shakespeare continues to speak to contemporary readers in all sorts of circumstances."--Booklist "The work that Laura Bates has been doing for years with prison inmates and Shakespeare is of extraordinary importance. It has a kind of beauty and symmetry all its own."--David Bevington, Shakespeare scholar, University of Chicago "An eye-opening study reiterating the perennial power of books, self-discipline, and the Bard of Avon."--Kirkus While He Was Breaking Out of Prison, The Thin Blue Line: How Humanitarianism Went to War free epub She Was Trying to Break In. Shakespeare professor and prison volunteer Laura Bates thought she had seen it all. That is, until she decided to teach Shakespeare in a place the bard had never been before -- supermax solitary confinement. In this unwelcoming place, surrounded by inmates known as the worst of the worst, is Larry Newton. A convicted murderer with several escape attempts under his belt and a brilliantly agile mind on his shoulders, Larry was trying to break out of prison at the same time Laura was fighting to get her program started behind bars. Thus begins the most unlikely of friendships, one bonded by Shakespeare and lasting years--a friendship that, in the end, would save more than one life.

The Faith Instinct: How Religion Evolved and Why It Endures

Description

A "New York Times" science reporter makes a startling new case that religion has an evolutionary basis. For the last 50,000 years, and probably much longer, people have practiced religion. Yet little attention has been given to the question of whether this universal human behavior might have been implanted in human nature. In this original and thought-provoking work, Nicholas Wade traces how religion grew to be so essential to early societies in their struggle for survival, how an instinct for faith became hardwired into human nature, and how it provided an impetus for law and government. "The Faith Instinct" offers an objective and nonpolemical exploration of humanity's quest for spiritual transcendence.

The Things of Earth: Treasuring God by Enjoying His Gifts

Description

The world is full of good things. Ice-cold lemonade. The laughter of children. College football. Scrambled eggs and crispy bacon. But what happens to these earthly pleasures when Jesus shows up? Do the things of earth grow strangely dim? Or does he shine in all that's fair? In this book, Joe Rigney offers a breath of fresh air to Christians who are burdened by false standards, impossible expectations, and misguided notions of holiness. Steering a middle course between idolatry on the one hand and ingratitude on the other, this much-needed book reminds us that every good gift comes from the Father's hand, that God's blessings should drive us to worship and generosity, and that a passion for God's glory is as wide as the world.

Jean Hugard: Encyclopedia of Card Tricks

Encyclopedia of Card Tricks

Description

In the first decades of the twentieth century magicians filled the magic journals with articles on card tricks, giving improvements on classic tricks and inventing new ones. If you could put together a collection of these magazines you would have almost a complete course on card tricks, by some of ther world's greatest magicians. But where could you find these journals now that they are probably collector's items? And even if you could find them, how much would a collection cost? Not very much. Becuse all the best of these tricks are available in this one monumental book, containing nearly every practical card trick produced, invented and improved by magicians over a span of forty years and more.

EEING OTHER PEOPLE is a hilarious and bittersweet novel about love, parenthood and fidelity, and how easy it is to get lost on the way to your own happy ending. As all good grannies know, the most precious gift they can offer their grandchildren is time - Jane Fearnley-Whittingstall, a loving and closely involved grandmother of four children, has gathered first-hand tips from other grandparents and their families in many different situations. The result is a wonderfully insightful handbook - a vast resource of wisdom, history and humour - covering everything from childcare troubleshooting to what NOT to say to the daughter-in-law. Future Christ is one of the first English translations of the work of Francois Laruelle, one of the most exciting voices in contemporary French philosophy and the creator of the practice of 'non-philosophy'. In this work Laruelle draws on material from the traditions of Christianity, Judaism and Gnosticism, but he does so by suspending their authority. This adventure in non-philosophy does not claim to think for religion, but from it as material and with disinterest towards its self-given status as ultimate authority. This provocative, yet remarkably accessible book introduces philosophy to the lessons of heresy and makes use of them in Encyclopedia of Card Tricks free pdf a non-philosophical "dualysis" of messianism and apocalypticism. Laruelle investigates the "heretic question", analogous to but historically distinguished from the "Jewish question", to develop a "non-Christian science" that struggles against and for our World. Future Christ thus opens up novel ways of thinking within existing religious and philosophical thought and marks an incisive and wide-ranging non-philosophical engagement with key contemporary debates in philosophy and theology.

This war has drawn international attention. In a dress rehearsal for World War II, fascists support the Nationalists, while communists have come to the aid of the Republicans. Atrocities have devastated both sides. It is at this moment, when the Republicans have surrendered, and the Guardia Civil has begun to impose order in the ruins of Madrid, that Tejada finds the body of his best friend, a hero of the siege of Toledo, shot to death on a street named Amor de Dios. Naturally, a Red is suspected. And it is easy for Tejada to assume that the woman caught kneeling over the body is the killer. But when his doubts are aroused, he cannot help seeking justice. "An almost absurdly likeable heroine." The Gospel of John is the first film by The Lumo Project which brings the original Jesus narrative to the screen using the Gospel text as its script, word for word. Informed by leading world experts' latest theological, historical and archaeological research on every aspect of life in first century Palestine, this is a ground breaking multi-million pound film series that revolutionises the way we experience and understand the story of Jesus. Based entirely on the unedited, unabridged New Testament Gospels, Songwriting: A Complete Guide to the Craft pdf its dramatised action is accompanied by voice over narration by Brian Cox and David Harewood. Filmed with authentic actors and settings, the perfect Holy Land backdrop, including computer generated Jerusalem and Temple. Winner of UK Christian Film Festival Awards 2015: Best Series and Best of British.

The Demographic Cliff: How to Survive and Prosper During the Great Deflation Ahead

Description

Bestselling author and financial guru Harry Dent shows why we're facing a "great deflation" and what to do about it now. Throughout his long career as an economic forecaster, Harry Dent has relied on a not-sosecret weapon: demographics. He can explain why our economy has risen and fallen with the peak spending of generations, and why we now face a growing demographic cliff with the accelerating retirement of the Baby Boomers around the world. Inflation rises when a larger than usual block of younger people enter the workforce, and it wanes when large numbers of older people retire, downsize their homes, and cut their spending. The mass retirement of the Boomers won't just hold back inflation; it and massive debt deleveraging will actually cause deflation. Dent explores the implications of his controversial predictions and offers advice on retirement planning, health care, real estate, education, investing, and business strategies.

'A master of the genre' The Times The seventh novel in Anthony Riches' acclaimed Empire sequence brings Marcus Aquila back to Rome, hunting the men who destroyed his family. A senator, a gang boss, a praetorian officer and, deadliest of all, champion gladiator Mortiferum - the Death Bringer - lie in wait. The knives are unsheathed, and ready for blood ...
